Title: Clark Kent for the Defense
AU/Fandom: Clark Kent, Esquire/Smallville
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Rating: Mature (at least)
Summary: Attorney Clark Kent is drawn back into the life of his former mentor, Lex Luthor, when Lex asks Clark to defend socialite Lana Lang when she is charged with murdering Lex's ex-lover, Jason Teague's mother, Genevieve Teague. Clark finds this murder case may be related to his own mysterious past.

The blue Tynant bottles were perfectly chilled and moisture beaded on their surfaces as they rested in a silver ice bucket on the refreshment table. Lex twisted off a cap and drank the imported water thirstily. He had to smile that Clark remembered his favorite brand after all these years.

"What is Kent trying to pull, L --Luthor?" Pete Ross stuttered, watching Lex practically fellate the beverage. "What is all this nonsense he's bringing up about the stones? Some sort of a smoke screen for the real crime that was committed? Blaming the victim for getting killed?"

Lex turned from the buffet to face the agitated Ross. "I'm sure I don't know what you mean, Mr. Ross." Lex casually licked a drop of water from his lips. "If I were you, I wouldn't make any assumptions about this case or about Clark Kent. I made that mistake once."

"What are you saying?" Ross stepped back warily.

"Nothing more than I've already stated for the record." Lex saluted Ross with the Tynant bottle before finishing off the contents in a quick pull. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have other appointments today."

He left the sweating bottle on the table, mocking Ross' discomfiture.

Clark caught up with Lex at the elevator. "That wasn't nice. Pete's not used to that kind of behavior."

"And you are? " Lex huffed, not even glancing at Clark's face. "I thought you'd left with the court reporter."

"Chloe saw Ms. Jenkins out."

"Your paralegal is a very efficient young woman," Lex observed

"I'd be lost without her," Clark admitted.

Lex did look at him then, with speculation in his eyes. "But she's nothing more than a colleague?"

Clark smiled. "She's also a friend. May I take you to lunch?"

"Only if there are no more questions about the stones or the murder."

"Can I help it if I'm curious about the stones? They have such a fascinating history."

"Please. Those rocks may be archaeological mysteries and excellent tools for my mother's charity functions, but they are just rocks."

Clark was careful to just shrug. "Maybe I like rocks." The elevator opened and they stepped inside. "How about Chinese?"

Pete Ross frowned as he watched the elevator doors close. He flipped open his cell phone.

"Hank? We need to get more information on Genevieve Teague's ties to the Luthors. No, I don't think Lex Luthor killed Mrs. Teague, but something about this case isn't as straightforward as I thought. Yes, I know. You warned me."

Poor Pete is so way over his head. Loved the scene with Lex and the water bottle. Heh.
