Title: Clark Kent for the Defense
AU/Fandom: Clark Kent, Esquire/Smallville
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Rating: Mature (at least)
Summary: Attorney Clark Kent is drawn back into the life of his former mentor, Lex Luthor, when Lex asks Clark to defend socialite Lana Lang when she is charged with murdering Lex's ex-lover, Jason Teague's mother, Genevieve Teague. Clark finds this murder case may be related to his own mysterious past.

The rest of the ride to Clark's office had been filled with Clark making phone calls to his office and other contacts. Lana had let the details wash over her. When they arrived at Clark, Masterson, she let Clark lead her into a small, comfortable conference room that was comfortably appointed instead of being a sterile meeting area. Lana sank into a comfortable wing chair while Clark picked up the phone and dialed.

"Chloe, please join me and Ms Lang in the Sitting Room for tea."

"Tea?" Lana questioned with raised eyebrow at the service cart loaded with finger sandwiches, miniature fruit tarts and other delicacies.

"While I'm sure something more -- bracing -- might be appreciated, we need to work. Claudia has provided us with a light meal that will tide us over."

"Until when? Can I go back to my apartment?"

"The scene's been released by forensics --" Clark began, but stopped when a light tap sounded on the door. "Come in."

Lana stood as a young blonde carrying several file folder entered and immediately glared at Clark.

"Only you would have the nerve to order high tea. Everyone one else is afraid of Madame Claudia." The blonde shook her head ruefully as she put the files in order for their use.

"Everyone else didn't beg the aspiring chef for her cherry tarts when they were four years old, Chloe. Mom can't make a pie to save her life and Claudia's tarts are to die for. Lana Lang, I'd like to introduce you to Chloe Sullivan, my paralegal. She is assisting me with your case."

Chloe's handshake was firm. "Welcome to Clark, Masterson, Ms. Lang."

"Thank you."

Clark poured Lana a cup of tea. "Milk? Lemon? Sugar?"

"Nothing, thank you." She took the cup of fragrant tea and sat back down in her wing chair. Clark and Chloe took seats across the small table from her. "So tell me, Miss Sullivan. How bad does my case look?" Lana directed the question at the new player in the room.

To her credit, Chloe Sullivan didn't flinch. "To be honest, Ms Lang? If your case went to the jury tomorrow, the circumstantial evidence would weigh very heavily against you. Mrs. Teague was found in your apartment. There were witnesses to an altercation between you, and the Teagues at the Gala where Mrs. Teague made no secret of her opposition to your engagement to Jason. Her blood was on your clothing. However, the forensics do cast some doubt."

"What do you have, Chloe?" Clark asked.

"The Stone of Flight had to be surgically removed from Mrs. Teague's body. It was driven upwards through the rib cage and into her heart with considerable force. Almost as if it were launched from a crossbow or mounted on the tip of a spear. The Stone, while shaped somewhat like one, is not a spear point."

"That doesn't make sense. How am I supposed to have used the Stone to kill Genevieve then?"

"You would have had to use the stone as a dagger from very close range to approximate the angle of the thrust. Perhaps standing within her arms."

Lana grimaced in distaste. "I don't think so. Genevieve wasn't my type."

Chloe looked thoughtful for a moment. "That's an interesting point. Whoever stabbed Mrs. Teague had to be someone she trusted. Your apartment showed no sign of a struggle. Genevieve had no defensive wounds. The only things out of place when the police arrived were Mrs. Teague, surrounded by a pool of blood and you with blood on your hands and dress. The blood evidence on the dress further supports your story. There is no spray on the dress to indicate splatter from the killing blow. The blood on it, though great, is consistent with checking on the condition of Mrs Teague."

"Isn't everyone ignoring the big question?"

"What question is that, Ms. Lang?" Chloe asked.

"How would I have gotten the Stone to allegedly kill Genevieve with in the first place? Wasn't it locked in a case at the Gala being viewed by thousands of the Luthors' guests?"

Clark had been sitting back in his chair nonchalantly nibbling a cherry tart watching Chloe brief Lana. "Or was it?" He interjected. "Genevieve Teague wanted those stones. Perhaps she'd found someone who could get them for her?"

Lana's eyes narrowed dangerously. "And who could possibly have broken Lex's security?"
