Title: Clark Kent for the Defense
AU/Fandom: Clark Kent, Esquire/Smallville
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Rating: Mature (at least)
Summary: Attorney Clark Kent is drawn back into the life of his former mentor, Lex Luthor, when Lex asks Clark to defend socialite Lana Lang when she is charged with murdering Lex's ex-lover, Jason Teague's mother, Genevieve Teague. Clark finds this murder case may be related to his own mysterious past.

Martha Clark Kent boarded the first leg of her Metropolis bound flight from Hong Kong and settled into her first class seat as the other passengers began to board. She hid her surprise a moment later when Edward Teague took the seat next to her. Martha wondered what the elegant British socialite, Genevieve, had seen in this portly, balding denizen of the financial district other than his bank balance.

"Ms. Kent," he acknowledged her cooly.

"Mr. Teague. I'm sorry to hear the news about your wife." Martha offered politely.

"Sorry? I understand that your son is defending the woman who murdered my wife." He returned angrily.

Martha schooled her expression to hide her shock at this bit of news with all of the discipline she'd cultivated since she'd returned to Metropolis and her father's law firm. What the hell was Clark doing taking on this case without informing her? How dare he let the information reach the press before she could return? "Edward, you know that I can't discuss the details of an ongoing case with you. Especially not one involving a member of your own family. I'm sure that you will be apprised of the details by the district attorney's office when we arrive in Metropolis."

Edward's eyes narrowed and Martha calmly signaled for the flight attendant.

"May I be of assistance?" the lovely Asian woman inquired.

"I'm so sorry to trouble you, but Mr. Teague and I find ourselves unable to sit together. Would it be possible to reseat him?"

"Of course, Ms. Kent. Mr. Teague, we have an open first class seat two rows back."

Edward bit back his outrage and smiled tightly at the attendant's eagerness to be of help. Martha sensed that this argument wasn't over.

Martha was pleased to see that Edward's new seat mate was already taking advantage of the airline's free cocktail service in first class. The young gentleman would need it. She felt in need of a glass of scotch herself while she thought of how to deal with Clark and this new case.

"Your mother is on her way back from Hong Kong," William Clark informed his grandson. "Oh, do sit down. You'll wear a hole in the rug."

Clark stopped pacing back and forth across his grandfather's Persian rug . The complaint wasn't just hyperbole.

"Sorry sir." He sat down in a big chair near the window where a shaft of wintery sunlight could warm him somewhat. "I should have consulted you both before agreeing to represent Lana Lang."

"Why did you agree? From your preliminary notes, the woman appears to be guilty of the crime."

"That's what's so puzzling. Ms. Lana is barely bothering to deny the charges. She has no alibi. The forensics seem to point to her. And yet.... I don't believe that the case is entirely cut and dried. And then there's the murder weapon itself."

William Clark frowned. "What's so unusual about the murder weapon?"

"I think it may be from the same place I'm from."

Ahhh, so Clark does know about his abilities. But does he know that he's an alien yet? Very interesting.

I'm glad to see you continuing to write this!

Yeah!!! Go Martha. Tough inner steel that woman has there and I'm glad she stood up to Teague.

As for Clark, the mystery of his origins might be solved. Loved the setting the carpet on fire literally, line.

I think one of the most apparent, and appreciated, differences between your a/u and cannon is the strength of its female characters. On the show the only truly strong woman is Chloe, and even she has her 'moments' of weakness... which is entirely excusable since she is in fact rather young. But your portrayal of the mothers is awesome, rarely seen, and truly inspirational. btw, what happened to Lionel and Jonathon anyway?
