Title: Clark Kent for the Defense
AU/Fandom: Clark Kent, Esquire/Smallville
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Rating: Mature (at least)
Summary: Attorney Clark Kent is drawn back into the life of his former mentor, Lex Luthor, when Lex asks Clark to defend socialite Lana Lang when she is charged with murdering Lex's ex-lover, Jason Teague's mother, Genevieve Teague. Clark finds this murder case may be related to his own mysterious past.

"I don't like being kept waiting," Lex complained when Clark joined him in one of the conference rooms at the offices of Clark, Masterson.

Clark had thought he'd prepared himself for this meeting, but seeing Lex on Clark's own turf had more impact that Clark expected.

"Don't you check your messages, Lex? I had to deal with Ms. Lang's arraignment. I left you two messages that this meeting was postponed." Clark covered his disconcertment with irritation and sat down opposite Lex. He opened his portfolio to his notes on his meeting with Lana with a bit more force than necessary.

Lex had the grace to look embarrassed, but he not once did his hand move toward his cell phone to verify that Clark had sent the messages. "You are taking Lana's case?"

"She is going to need the best attorney she can get to convince a jury that she didn't kill Genevieve Teague."

"And that would be you?" Lex asked.

"Why else would you have called me, Lex? We haven't exactly moved in the same legal circles in the last ten years."

"You weren't interested in corporate law."

"And the only criminal law you were interested in dealing with was the kind the SEC is interested in prosecuting."

"We both changed our legal philosophies since you left law school. You're working with your mother and grandfather handling high profile clients instead of working for the Public Defender's Office."

"And that brings us back to Lana Lang. I've never met a woman so unconcerned that she was being charged with murder or that the victim was dead."

Lex laughed. "I'll admit that Lana's not the warmest woman I've ever met, but I don't think she's a murderer. Jason's happy with her."

Clark's raised one speculative eyebrow, but didn't comment.

"Are they at least allowing Lana bail?" Lex sighed.

"Five million dollars cash and surrender of her passport." Clark stated very matter-of-factly.

"Jason should have no trouble raising the bail." Lex sat back in his seat.

"Will Jason pay her bail? She's accused of killing his mother."

"Lana is his fiancee." Lex objected.

"Lana seems to think that with Genevieve out of the way, Jason has no reason to want to marry her anymore. Jason would be free to pursue you again. According to her, it was public knowledge that you two were seeing each other again."

Lex didn't even flinch. "That's absurd. Jason and I no longer had any relationship other than business. My relationship with Jason and Lana has been that of family friend and nothing more."

"Mrs. Teague didn't threaten to cut off Jason's inheritance if he didn't marry and produce an heir?"

"Am I a suspect in this case?" Lex's eyes narrowed.

"I'm afraid that anything more that Ms Lang and I have discussed would be client-attorney privileged information, Lex." Clark pulled a document from a pocket of his portfolio. "However, this is a subpoena. I want a formal deposition from you about what happened at the gala and afterwards."

Lex stared at the document.

"That wasn't necessary. I would have told you anything you wanted to know."

"I'm sure you would have. But how much would you have expected me to tell you in return?"
