Title: Clark Kent for the Defense
AU/Fandom: Clark Kent, Esquire/Smallville
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Rating: Mature (at least)
Summary: Attorney Clark Kent is drawn back into the life of his former mentor, Lex Luthor, when Lex asks Clark to defend socialite Lana Lang when she is charged with murdering Lex's ex-lover, Jason Teague's mother, Genevieve Teague. Clark finds this murder case may be related to his own mysterious past.

The jogging paths in Metropolis City Park were nearly deserted in the moments before dawn. Clark Kent loved to run but the city didn't give him much room to stretch his legs. He had to be careful in the park using his speed. His mother had briefly lived on a farm and Clark often wondered what it would have been like to have grown up where he could run in open fields.

Ordinary ears would have missed the scream that had been cut off almost as soon as it had begun. Clark forgot about being careful and rushed to its origin, finding a young woman being attacked at knife point.

"I'd think twice before doing that," he said quietly.

The man flung the girl away from him and turned his knife on Clark. Clark sidestepped the knife and used the man's weight and forward momentum against him. In a moment, the attacker was unconscious and disarmed. Clark kicked the knife away from the man and used his own jacket to create crude restraints. He pulled out his cell phone and began dialing 911 even as he moved to the girl's side.

"Are you all right?" He asked.

She nodded shakily. "I'm fine. Thank you."

"Metropolis PD, please state your emergency." The operator came on the line.

"My name is Clark Kent. I'm in Metropolis Park with a young woman who was nearly attacked on the jogging trails. Her attacker lunged after me with his knife and I managed to subdue him. He's tied up with his own jacket. Could you send someone to the Penguin Trail, marker 33?" Clark spoke very clearly.

The operator was silent for about five seconds. "Is anyone in need of medical attention?"

"The man with the knife is unconscious. The young lady should see someone to make sure he didn't hurt her."

"Officers are en route. I will stay on the line with you until they arrive."

"Thank you."

Clark shook Officer Barrows hand. "If you need anything else from me, contact me at my office."

"Thank you, Mr. Kent. Ms. Wolfe was lucky you were out jogging this morning. I wish that we had as much luck with all of our victims," the officer shook his head as they walked out of the interrogation room where Clark had given the police his statement.

Clark frowned. "Sounds serious."

At that moment the precinct erupted in chaos as a new prisoner was brought into the station followed by reporters and photographers.

"What's going on?"

"That victim I was talking about? Genevieve Teague was murdered last night. Looks like they just brought in the suspect."

"Suspect? Isn't that the artist, Lana Lang?"

"Yeah, the woman that's been seeing Mrs. Teague's son."

"She's dating Jason Teague? I thought he --" Clark stopped the sentence cold when he saw Jason in the crowd as well.

Clark's cell phone vibrated at his hip. He reached for it. "Kent."

"Clark? This is Lex Luthor."

"Lex? This is a surprise." Clark was wary. He hadn't spoken to Lex since he graduated law school. Why was he calling?

"I know we haven't spoken in a long time, but I need to ask a favor."

"What kind of favor?" This was too much for one morning before breakfast.

"Lana Lang has been arrested."

"I know." Clark nodded good-bye to the officer and stepped out of his hearing to continue his conversation with Lex.

"How do you know? She was just taken downtown."

"I'm at the police station. Lex, the whole city is going to know about this. There are reporters everywhere."

"Reporters? How did they get the story so soon?"

"Someone in the department may have tipped them off. Genevieve Teague was an important woman in this town."

"Lana needs an attorney."

"I thought she was your client."

"She's my business partner. I can't represent her. And then there's Jason."

"Of course, Jason."

"It's a conflict of interest, Clark. I'm sure your recognize the term? You gave me that excuse when you turned down my offer to work with me."

"Lex." Clark sighed. "I'll speak to her since I'm here, but I'm not promising to take the case. Come by my office in two hours. We'll discuss this."

Clark hung up on Lex.

Ohh. I like this.

And I'm thinking that Clark had something for Lex, but Lex had something for Jason for a while. Hmmmm.

I also like a strong Clark as opposed to a wishywashy one.

And you only mentioned a mother. So Jonathan died or Martha divorced him?
