Title: Clark Kent for the Defense
AU/Fandom: Clark Kent, Esquire/Smallville
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Rating: Mature (at least)
Summary: Attorney Clark Kent is drawn back into the life of his former mentor, Lex Luthor, when Lex asks Clark to defend socialite Lana Lang when she is charged with murdering Lex's ex-lover, Jason Teague's mother, Genevieve Teague. Clark finds this murder case may be related to his own mysterious past.
Martha Clark Kent had returned to Metropolis very late the previous evening. William sent the limo to the airport for her. Clark hadn't seen his mother since she'd been back and he waited until she had a chance to settle in before welcoming her back to the office, knowing that she would be reviewing his work on the Lang case first thing.
Clark hugged Martha before taking the chair in front of her imposing desk like a penitent school boy called into the principal's office. "Welcome back, Mother. Have you decided whether to lecture me for not consulting you before taking Lana Lang's case or are you going to banish me to the tax law division after the trial?" He shuddered with mock regret.
Martha sighed and sat down in her own comfortable leather chair. "I should get you assigned to Smallville and the Public Defender's Office working pro bono for the next year. I had to deal with Edward Teague on the plane from Hong Kong."
Clark winced. "Tell me you didn't have to sit next to him. Teague may be able to give Greenspan a run for his money in the financial community, but his social skills leave a great deal to be desired. I never understood what Genevieve saw in him."
"I hate to speak ill of the dead, but Genevieve married Edward strictly for his money and pedigree. She would have given Lillian competition for Lionel Luthor if he'd really been descended from Scottish nobility. Edward was quite disagreeable about your defense of Lana Lang. Fortunately for you, the flight attendant was able to re-seat him. About Ms. Lang." Martha raised an inquisitive brow. "Did she kill Genevieve?"
"No," Clark said decisively, yet not revealing any more details.
"You know something," Martha accused.
"I do, but I'm not sure what I know has anything to do with Genevieve Teague's murder. You and I have to talk about Smallville."
"Smallville?"
"Look closely at the symbols on the murder weapon." Clark nodded at the folder on his mother's desk and then glanced at his watch. "Lex Luthor's deposition's in twenty minutes. I have to go."
"Oh, my God." Martha whispered as the door closed behind him.

The court reporter sat at the head of the table dutifully recording Lex's answers to both Clark and Pete Ross' questions about the night of the Gala. Clark began the session with a series of rapid fire questions.
"What time were the Stones secured in their display cases?" Clark asked Lex.
"Mother's security team delivered the Stones from the Manor to the Haldorf at 3:00 pm on November 19. The Stones were checked by the staff at the hotel and placed in the cases. The security system was set by 4:00 pm. Guards were in place in the Ballroom while the final setup by the catering team was done. I returned to the Manor to dress for the event."
"When did you notice that the Stone of Flight was missing?"
"I was unaware that the Stone was missing until I was contacted by Jason Teague at approximately 4:00 am on November 20 and told that his mother, Genevieve, had been murdered. When I left the Gala at midnight, all three of the Stones were still under armed guard."
"Who was in charge of returning the stones to Luthor Manor?"
"The Stones were to remain on display at the Haldorf through the Thanksgiving weekend. Security arrangements were in place until Monday, November 29 at 8:00 am when an armed courier was to return them to the vault at Luthor Manor."
"Was the loan of the Stones to the Haldorf an unusual arrangement?"
"No, Mother has loaned the artifacts to several institutions for fund-raising events as long as the proper security was in place."
"Was the security for the Haldorf more elaborate than usual."
Lex shifted uncomfortably. "Yes."
"Why was the security increased?"
"Our insurers demanded it."
"Who was aware of the exact details of the security arrangements for the Stones?"
"Robert Carr, the head of LuthorCorp Security; my mother, Lillian Luthor; Trevor Haldorf, the owner of the Haldorf Hotel; and me."
"Had Genevieve Teague approached you about acquiring the Stones prior to the Gala?"
Lex was surprised at the question.
"No."
Lex continued to answer questions for the next two hours. At the end of the session, he was certain of two things -- Pete Ross was out of his league and Clark knew something about those stones that he wasn't saying.
