Title: Clark Kent for the Defense
AU/Fandom: Clark Kent, Esquire/Smallville
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Rating: Mature (at least)
Summary: Attorney Clark Kent is drawn back into the life of his former mentor, Lex Luthor, when Lex asks Clark to defend socialite Lana Lang when she is charged with murdering Lex's ex-lover, Jason Teague's mother, Genevieve Teague. Clark finds this murder case may be related to his own mysterious past.
"What's this about transferring five million dollars to the Metropolis Department of Corrections?" Julian didn't even knock on Lex's office door, much less allow Susan a chance to announce him.
"Good afternoon to you, too, little brother." Lex bit back a sigh at Julian's interruption. He leaned back in his leather chair and feigned an air of indifference. "It's Ms. Lang's bail, as I'm sure you already know."
"There must be less expensive ways of wooing Jason Teague back into your bed," Julian sniped.
Lex laughed. "You think I'm still interested in Jason?"
"Please don't tell me you want that simpering little social climber." Julian was scandalized.
"Oh, Julian, don't you think that Lana would make a good politician's wife?" Lex teased.
Julian relaxed. "If you aren't doing this for Jason and you aren't interested in Lana, why are you shelling out five million dollars?"
"Do I have to have an ulterior motive?" Lex tried to look insulted.
"Lex, you have an ulterior motive for changing your socks."
Lex acknowledged his little brother's assessment with a shrug. "Let's just say that we need to be on the right side when this case breaks."
Julian's eyes narrowed. "What do you know?"
"Just that the Teagues argued at the Gala over Lana."
"That doesn't surprise me. "Jason told Mother that he expected Genevieve to react badly when he and Lana arrived together."
"When was this?" Lex asked, sharply.
"In the receiving line that you found a convenient excuse to not be in." Julian reminded. "The one where Mother introduced me to all of her business acquaintances as LuthorCorp's newest junior executive?"
"It was bad enough Mother insisted that I escort her pet fund-raising dragon, I wasn't greeting all of those guests. Perhaps I should tell Clark that you should be his witness instead of me. You seem to know more about what happened at the party than I do."
"Clark?"
"Clark Kent, Lana's attorney."
Julian's eyebrow climbed. "The Clark Kent?"
"Is there more than one in Metropolis?"
"I think I'm beginning to understand why you're paying Lana's bail."
*****
"You're bail's been paid," The guard informed her.
"It's about time," Lana grumbled as her cell was opened to allow her to follow him to Processing.
Clark Kent waited for her at the Property window when she emerged from the cellblock once again in her own clothes, the jeans and sweater she'd hastily donned when the forensics team had taken the clothes she was wearing the night of Genevieve's murder..
"Thank you for arranging for bail," she tried to sound grateful, but her tone came off sullen.
"Don't thank me. Lex Luthor is your benefactor."
"Lex? Why would he --? For Jason, of course," she answered her own question, bitterly.
"Painting Lex as a rival for Jason's affections won't make you seem very sympathetic to a jury, Miss Lang." Clark waited for Lana to sign for the few personal items she'd had with her when she'd been booked. Then he led her outside where he had a car waiting.
"Where are you taking me?" Lana allowed Clark to seat her in the back of the limo and instruct the driver that they were ready to go.
"My office. We need to discuss details about your case. I need to find the real killer. The papers are speculating that you did this because Genevieve didn't approve of your marriage to Jason."
"I've already told you that killing Genevieve wouldn't guarantee me marriage to Jason. Keeping her alive and happy with me as her potential daughter-in-law was the only way to do that." Lana kept her gaze on the windows, watching the city roll past.
"I'm interested in your connection to the Three Stones. Isn't the tattoo on your back a match for the Water Stone in Lillian Luthor's connection?"
"What if it is?" Lana turned and looked at Clark with anger in her eyes. "I had never seen the stones before the Gala. I got the tattoo in France before Jason and I met. I saw the design on the tomb of a French woman from the 17th Century who was burned at the stake because she was accused of being a witch." She turned back to the window.
Clark was intrigued. "A witch?"
"According to legend she bewitched a man of some wealth into marriage and giving her his heir without the consent of his family." Lana shrugged. "Isabelle Thereoux didn't conform to their standards of behavior so they set the church upon her. Her husband managed to save his heir," Lana said, wryly.
"I take it you felt some kinship with this woman?"
"Only in that she was persecuted for going after what she wanted."
"Just like you went after Jason?"
"Hardly. He's the one who pursued me. I told him to get lost the first time we met. He reminded me too much of the boys that drooled over me in Smallville, before my aunt Nell had the sense to fall in love with a good man and move us to Metropolis. Especially when I found out he played football." Lana visibly shuddered.
"What changed your mind?"
Clark could just see Lana's small smile as she remembered. "Truthfully? He asked me to an opera and didn't make jokes about Julia Roberts."
