Title: Clark Kent for the Defense
AU/Fandom: Clark Kent, Esquire/Smallville
Pairing: Clark/Lex
Rating: Mature (at least)
Summary: Attorney Clark Kent is drawn back into the life of his former mentor, Lex Luthor, when Lex asks Clark to defend socialite Lana Lang when she is charged with murdering Lex's ex-lover, Jason Teague's mother, Genevieve Teague. Clark finds this murder case may be related to his own mysterious past.
The Neptune Condominiums weren't the sort of place the Metropolis Police Department made regular calls. The sight of the a crime scene investigation unit, police cruisers and a pair to detectives invading their domain was unsettling to the wealthy inhabitants of the complex.
"Nice dress." Inspector Bill Henderson raised an eyebrow at the deep blue ball gown Detective Lieutenant Maggie Sawyer was wearing when she entered the crime scene at 3:00 am.
"I just came from the Haldorf." Her partner's eyebrows rose even higher. "I had a date for the Gala. We decided to stay over at the last minute. What have we got?"
"You were at the Gala?" So his partner was dating someone with deep pockets. "You might have seen our vic. Genevieve Teague, female, mid-fifties, cause of death appears to be stabbing with a metallic wedge, currently still embedded in her chest. Her son's fiancee, Lana Lang, called it in. This is her apartment. She claims to have discovered the body when she returned from the Gala at approximately 1:00 am. 911 call was placed at 1:04. Police and an ambulance arrived on the scene at 1:25, but the EMTs determined that Mrs Teague was dead at the scene. Miss Lang was discovered by the body, covered in blood. The investigative unit is processing the scene."
Maggie let out a very unladylike whistle. "Genevieve Teague? Only Lillian Luthor commands more press than the Teagues in this town. If Lang doesn't have a good alibi for this, the press will have her convicted in time for the morning news."
The lead crime scene investigator, Nate Thomas, came out of the dining area where the body was being readied for removal. Neither Maggie nor Bill was surprised that the head of the department was handling this case. "Miss Lang isn't doing much talking."
"Is she in shock?" Bill asked.
"I wouldn't call it shock. Miss Lang is -- uncooperative. My team is processing the bloody clothing she was wearing when the officers arrived."
"So, what was the time of death?" Maggie asked.
"According to liver temp and the degree of coagulation of the blood pool, Mrs. Teague couldn't have been dead much more than an hour when the EMTs arrived. We'll have to remove the murder weapon at the morgue. It's practically buried in the body."
"Any idea what the murder weapon is?" Bill asked
"I thought at first it was the tip of something that had broken off in Mrs. Teague's chest like a spear point since the wedge has been driven through the ribcage into the heart. Only the smooth edges remain visible. We'll know more when we can examine it." Nate answered.
"Did Miss Lang mention why Mrs. Teague was in her apartment?" Maggie asked.
"She has only asked for Jason Teague, the fiance and the vic's son."
"I wonder what he's going to think when he finds out that his mother's dead?"
"Dead, who's dead?" The voice came from the apartment door. The detectives and the criminologist turned to meet the newcomer, an attractive man in a tuxedo missing his cummerbund and tie.
"I'm sorry, Inspector," the officer guarding the door apologized. "This man claims that he lives here. He says his name is Jason Teague."
Maggie recovered first. "Mr. Teague, can you tell us where you've been this evening?"
"Who's dead? Is Lana alright?" Jason demanded.
"Mr. Teague, I'm sorry, but it's your mother." Maggie tried to be gentle, but she had to deliver the news.
Jason recoiled as if slapped "Mother? What happened? Who did this?"
At that moment, the coroner's team came out of the dining room with the shrouded body, followed closely by a female officer and Lana Lang in handcuffs.
